A common skin disease that is contagious, athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that usually begins on the toes. Athlete’s foot most commonly occurs when feet become sweaty after having been confined in shoes that fit too tightly. It can spread from one person to another on contaminated towels, floors or clothing. While over the counter medications can be used to treat athlete’s foot, more often than not it does reoccur. In those instances, prescription medication may be required.
